Triathlon dentist raises £3,300 for Cherry Lodge

Cherry Lodge Cancer Care is delighted to tell our website readers that Dr Hussein S. Patanwala has raised a most impressive £3,300 to help us fund our wide range of services for people affected by cancer. We are very grateful for his support and offer our heartfelt thanks both to him and to his many sponsors, some of whom were extremely generous.

Dr Hussein (also commonly known as Nasser) Patanwala, is a clinical lecturer of Restorative Dentistry at Birmingham University and Lead Dentist at Oakville Dental, Selly Oak. Earlier this year he set himself the challenge to compete in his first triathlon to raise money for charity and decided to split his efforts between Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Cherry Lodge Cancer Care. The event he chose to take part in for us was the Stratford 220 Triathlon, held on 10th May 2015. This is a fun but challenging event based at Stratford Leisure and Visitor Centre, consisting of a pool based swim, a countryside bike route and a grass run course.

Hussein wrote to tell us that after hearing about our work from a colleague and a close friend who has first hand experience of Cherry Lodge, ‘he was truly inspired to push himself. Training was certainly tough, balancing swimming/running/cycling with work commitments. At times there was a great deal of pressure to give up due to the fitness required to complete all the disciplines together. However, with the support of family and friends he opened the sponsorship page and after only four days raised £3,300 for Cherry Lodge Cancer Care.’ He went on to complete the Stratford Triathlon course in a very creditable 1 hour and 30 minutes.

He described the experience as ‘massively rewarding’ and ‘would encourage anyone who wishes to donate or raise money through charity events to do so as every penny makes a difference’.
