Live Life, Live Well – a healthy living day

‘Live Life, Live Well’ was a very informative and enjoyable ‘healthy living day’ put on by Cherry Lodge Cancer Care at Barnet Multicultural Community Centre (BMCC) in Hendon. This ticket-only, free event, held on Monday 16th May 2016, was attended by more than 90 people.

The aim of the day – organised by Cherry Lodge’s nurses, Fiona and Kirsty – was to empower people living with cancer and other chronic or life-limiting conditions to make some positive but easy changes to their daily life. The guest speaker was Dr Pauline Leonard, MD FRCP, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Whittington Hospital, who stayed for the entire day to answer questions and provide advice. She is a firm believer in the benefits of sharing clinical expertise with patients.

There was also a selection of stalls providing information on behalf of: ACE (after cancer exercise) programme; All Together Better (of High Barnet and Burnt Oak); Barnet Carers Centre; Cherry Lodge Cancer Care; Dermasilk (therapeutic garments); Liz Raoul Wigs; Macmillan CAB (Barnet) providing welfare benefits advice; Prostate Cancer UK.

The various activities laid on during the day were all very well received, starting with an EXTEND (seated exercise) session led by Tracy Levy. This was followed by a Lebanese cookery demonstration by Mona Usher of Samara cuisine, which was greatly enjoyed – as was the delicious vegetarian Indian buffet lunch. In the afternoon there was a seated yoga session led by Kathryn Jackman and a mindfulness/relaxation session led by Tanya Adams. The Friern Barnet School Gospel Choir was unfortunately unable to attend for the ‘Sing Out’ but their choirmaster, Darren Evans-Henry, saved the day with his wonderful singing.

Fiona and Kirsty pass on their special thanks to Bahar Mohsini, manager of BMCC, for her help and enthusiasm in setting up the day. Thank you also to all the speakers, session leaders, stall holders and volunteers from BMCC and Cherry Lodge who each helped make this event such a great success.
